Answering the question about payment

I was going through notes post around Myspace and I ran across one which the model indicated that they were approached by a photographer to pay for a photoshoot with them. Their opinion was that they wouldn't pay for a shoot.

Quite often the response back to the model is you get what you pay for in quality. I've seen people get great photos without paying and I've seen people pay a ton and get a mess. As a photographer myself I have to ask the model what connections are you getting through the shoot? If you want additional value it can come through exposure, and follow-up activities. Are those worth paying for - quite likely yes.

This is my reply to that post:

When a photographer quotes a price to a model they are selling a service to the model as a client. Photos are created with a client or direction in mind. The services required to create the photos are taken into account - that includes talent of all types, the model, the designer, the makeup artist, hair stylist, photographer, set dresser, and other coordinating staff and resources. It isn't all in the process of taking the photos either, there is post work of retouching, packaging, distribution, and marketing.

While some will say they will not pay for a shoot, the question is what are they bringing to the shoot that brings value. Ultimately who is the client and for what purpose is the shoot held? When you shoot for personal reasons you ultimately are the client. There are many realms to modeling: art, fashion, commercial, promotional, and more. It isn't about the model or photographer unless they deem it so. It is about what the end result is to achieve.

Abandoned In Detroit brings a community together and connects. It catalogs growth and development. From photoshoots to fashion shows and coverage through media within Detroit and beyond. It is the emergence of fashion forces from the face of Detroit, a face that many love to loathe. Can we love the depths against which we ascend, pay homage to each? Social strength comes from numbers of people with purpose and direction.

I'm interested in hearing from people that are participating and those that are undecided as well.
